The LM386 may be the IC-of-choice for many homebrewers, but the LM380 is both much-more powerful and much quieter in terms of noise. Combined with a 2N2222A preamp, it’s capable of a 2.5 Watt output. That’s more than enough for a moderate-size speaker as used with Ham rigs. An input voltage of 3mV peak-to-peak to the AO-380 will come out the other end with all the volume you can use.
The AO-380 uses the 14-pin version of the 380 which provides better thermal sinking and can even be fitted with a heat sink on six of its pins.
